Creating a google sitemap is very important. Updating it evertime you add pages to your website is equally as important. If you fail to update it, google will assume your site is stagnant and ignore it for longer periods.

You will also be loosing out on getting it spidered if you fail to update it. The spiders will come round far more often if they know you have added fresh content. All you have to do is tell them you have added it.

There is free software out there for creating sitemaps. However I have tried quite a lot of these out and found them to be rank, or more trouble than they are worth. They always seem to have a better paid option as well that does so much more.
